Sin

Šin tai sin on heprealaisen, foinikialaisen ja aramealaisen kirjaimiston 21. kirjain. Se on kreikkalaisen sigman, latinalaisen S:n sekä kyrillisten С:n ja Ш:n edeltäjä. Heprealaisessa numerojärjestelmässä šinillä on lukuarvo 300. Heprean kielessä šin ääntyy joko tavallisena s-äänteenä /s/ (kuten sameh) tai suhuäänteenä /š/ (sh). Vokalisoidussa tekstissä kirjaimen päällä on piste edellisessä tapauksessa vasemmalla (sin), jälkimmäisessä oikealla (šin). Voikalisoimattomassa tekstissä piste jätetään yleensä pois. Kirjaimen nimi tulee hammasta tarkoittavasta sanasta. Juutalaisen perinteen mukaan kotien ovenpielessä on pieni kotelo (mezuza), joka sisältää joitakin pergamentille kirjoitettuja Tooran jakeita. Mezuzan päälle on kirjoitettu šin-kirjain, joka on alkukirjain sanasta Šadai (Kaikkivaltias). Esimerkkejä:
- שלום: šalom: rauha (tervehdys)
- שבת šabat: sapatti
- שלמה: Salomo
- שמואל: Samuel
- שמשון: Simson
